Zoolander
This week I decided to watch "Zoolander", as I had seen multiple previews and commercials for the new "'Zoolander 2" and was told by multiple people how funny the original movie was. Before watching the movie, I for some reason assumed that it had something to do with a zoo, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that the whole movie was making fun of the fashion industry. I think the topic of the film was funny enough, but Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Will Ferrel's acting added on to make the film even more hilarious. I really enjoyed the overall plot of the movie, which sometimes I do not like in comedy films, as they sometimes seem like a plotless movie with dirty jokes thrown in at every possible moment to get the audience to snicker. While this movie did have some dirty jokes, it's plot didn't solely rely on them, which was nice. I also liked how the topic of the movie was something relatable, as most people know and think of the fashion industry as completely over the top and ridiculous, and this movie played off that belief. Even though this was a comedy movie, I think it had, at least somewhat, a theme of battle, as Derick battled against Hansel as Male Model of the Year, and that competition was enough the pit them against each other in all aspects and even blind them from possible friendship. I also believe that this movie could have the theme of man vs. himself, as Derick, after loosing Male Model of the Year and making a fool of himself, has to deal with himself in the sense that he is being replaced by Hansel and modeling might not always be right for him. This makes Derick question both himself and his intentions, as well as the idea that he was been programed to assassinate someone, but he does not know what the trigger is. Overall, I really enjoyed "Zoolander", and I thought that Ben Stiller did a great job of both directing and acting in it. For comedies, I would give it a 7 out of 10.
