The Martian (Comedy Film)

My mom brought this movie home for my dad to watch when he was sick, but we all ended up watching The Martian tells the story of a group of astronauts who blast off from Mars but leave behind Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon).  They assume he is dead because they could not locate him during the storm that caused their departure.  I won't spoil it completely, but he obviously does not die because the entire movie depicts his survival on the planet until he is rescued.  At first I was confused as to how a movie about astronauts and Apollo missions could be a comedy, but I actually found it to be pretty funny.  I was impressed with Matt Damon's character especially when he stands as the only actor on the screen for long periods of time.  Most of the time this is attempted the audience members usually grow very bored with a single person roaming around the screen.  He keeps it interesting through joking around and making video diaries of his daily progress.  I was so into his character that I got really upset when something went wrong causing him to lose his renewable food supply.  Just like most films that take place in outer space or somewhere with a vast landscape, this one uses a significant amount of long shots.  They carry out most of the transitions from NASA on earth, to Matt on Mars. I have never seen a science fiction movie that doubles as a comedy, but am glad I did. I usually do not like science fiction films very much but the comedy is what made this one enjoyable for me.  I recommend this movie for anyone. 9/10.
