Comedy Film

The Interview (2014)

I’d like to start off by saying that yes, I was biased going into this movie.  Though bad comedies are my guilty pleasure (with Tropic Thunder being one of my favorite comedies of all time), I heard about this movie’s controversy and attempt at shock value and never got to watching it.  Now I finally watched it and I can say without a doubt I have never been and will never be amused by boring offensive-type shock value humor.  That’s not to say that I was even personally offended, that’s just the kind of jokes they are that aim to jab more sensitive people.   In all honesty, I was bored.  And when I wasn’t bored, I felt secondhand embarrassment at the movie’s bad writing and terrible acting.  James Franco should not be allowed to act in comedies because this was awful.  Some of his jokes weren’t even entirely unfunny, they were just so poorly executed I had to cringe.  On the bright side, the music and cinematography were actually surprisingly good; so good that it almost convinced me that I was watching a good movie, but big budgets won’t trick me this time.  There were many wide shots of the beautiful Korean scenery and of Kim Jong-un’s mansion, the close-ups were well timed, and the color coordination of every scene seemed as if there was an aesthetic filter over the entire movie.  Even so, that wasn’t enough to make this painless.  Without even careful attention, this movie obviously did not pass the Bechdel Test, and that’s probably the only thing that really offended me.
