Everyone knows that Melissa McCarthy is absolutely hilarious as a comedian, and in most characters that she plays in her movies. The last movie I had seen starring McCarthy was Tammy and I overall did not like that movie. The opening sequence was easily my favorite part of this entire movie. I am a big James Bond fan, and anyone who has seen James Bond can identify the famous opening of every movie. Spy mimicked the James Bond opening, highlighting the cheesy parts that we know and love. I had high hopes for the rest of the movie.
This movie had a lot of panoramic shots as the characters move from one country to the other in hopes of taking down Rayna and her father. Most CIA agents in movies are smooth and ready to take on any bad guy. McCarthy looks the complete opposite of that as she rolls up looking like a mess never being in the field on her life. I like this movie because there is an actual plot. Most comedy movies lose actual direction by overdoing the comedy, and ends up not being as funny as movies where the comedy is subtle, but put in at the right times (i.e. Marvel movies). Spy, however, was comedic, but also kept you interested throughout the whole thing.
Spy still did have the cheesy comedy aspects every movie needs to have, like Rayna accidentally killing three people, and humor while action is happening like Susan jumping on the helicopter. Overall I really liked this movie. It was definitely a step up from Tammy, and more along the lines of Bridesmaids which is also hilarious, starring two of the same characters. I would recommend this movie to people and would give it a 7 out of 10.
