For my movie this weekend I watched Star Trek Into Darkness. To be perfectly honest I know very little about Star Trek and besides the first Chris Pine movie I've never watched any. However I did find this movie to be supremely entertaining. The movie opens with a series of almost disorienting scenes, with the opening few played out by characters we don't know yet doing things that are at least at first over our heads. Then a sudden shock of the bombing of the Star Fleet office in London causes the viewer to immediately become critically aware of whats going on, almost making the viewer feel like anyone else in the city who would've been shocked and appalled at the sudden blast. This pattern continues as the viewer again finds himself in media res as we follow a mysterious man running through the jungle pursued by a mob of aliens. Eventually we discover that this man is in fact Captain Kirk, and that he and Bones are trying to distract the native population so Spock can clandestinely prevent a volcano going off and wiping out the natives. However this plan hits a snag as Spock becomes trapped in the volcano, and Kirk is faced with the choice of saving his friend or following the rules and executing the mission. He chooses to save his friend, a choice that ultimately backfires as Spock reports him for violating the prime directive, which causes him to lose his ship. However this quickly as the man who turns out to be khan conducts another attack on Star Fleet, killing many officers, including Kirk's mentor admiral Pike. The leader of Star Fleet, Admiral Marcus gives Kirk back the Enterprise and gives him an arsenal of torpedoes to use against khan. These torpedoes and Scotty's opposition to their use creates the second conflict for Kirk between his crew and his orders, this time choosing to follow through with his commands, albeit modifying them at the last second. At this point the action begins to pick up, as Kirk apprehends Khan, but is shocked to find that Khan and even himself and his crew had all been betrayed by Admiral Marcus and left to die. Allying with Khan on a desperate effort to save his crew, Kirk boards Marcus' ship and defeats him, only to have Khan kill Marcus and then cripple his ship. Ultimately Kirk has to sacrifice his life to save the crew, but is brought back by Khan's blood(or something like that). The movie is not exactly a cinematic masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it's suspenseful(if you know nothing about Star Trek), it's exciting, it's fun, the acting is more than adequate and the special effects are phenomenal. It may not be a best picture nominee, but it's a fun, entertaining movie that has been one of my favorite movies I've watched for this class. I would give this movie a 7 out of 10 and I would watch it again.
