Passion of the Christ (Jesus Film Review)
I chose to watch Passion of the Christ because it seemed to win the popular vote of everyone. After my dad was on the phone with the Amazon Fire Stick customer service for an hour or two, his most prized possession was working once again and I rented the movie. Overall, I did not love the movie because I felt like it drug certain scenes out for too long. I understand that Mel Gibson probably did this to try to portray the severe intensity of the abuse that Jesus endured, but at times it got past the point of disturbing and became boring. I was very creeped out by the character of Satan, which was played by Rosalinda Calentano. The acting was well done, however, because Satan is not intended to be a character that everyone likes. I did appreciate the creativity behind the times/places that Satan appeared, especially when he lurked amongst the crowds while Jesus was being tortured. This film uses a lot of slow motion to try to intensify the conflict or center the focus in certain scenes. It is first used during the initial seizing of Jesus in the garden, which I felt was a little unnecessary. The scene is already really dramatic and gory without it. This film is probably the most graphic I have scene about Jesus's death. Although it was hard to watch at times I thought it was well done for the most part. The special effects in this movie I felt like were either a complete hit or miss. Some of the dramatic moments, for example the falling of a single water droplet, were a little too much in my opinion. Overall, I think this movie is a good one to watch for those looking for a different take on Jesus's death, but I did not like it very much. 6.5/10.
