Sci-Fi Film

This week I was excited to see that the film type to watch was a Sci-Fi film. I love Sci-Fi movies because even though they are really weird, they are always able to hold my attention and surprise me. I went and saw "10 Cloverfield Lane", which is still in theaters, because the movie description sounded interesting as it was described as a thriller that contains a lot of twists. The movie starts out with extreme close ups of everyday objects, such as keys, as the protagonist, Michelle, argues with her boyfriend over the phone and then leaves her apartment, seemingly on the run. As she drives through the countryside, the camera shows no cars near her, and the radio reports of multiple power outages across the country. When she stops for gas, the only other car there is a non-descriptive white truck. Driving down a winding road, Michelle's car is suddenly hit and she is sent tumbling down a hill. In the next scene she wakes up in a small, dimly lit room, sleeping on a mattress while connected to an IV. She find herself chained to the wall and the door is locked so she cannot escape. As Michelle is freaking out, in walks Howard, played by John Goodman, who tells her that he rescued her and that he will not hurt her. After saying these vague lines, Howard leaves and does not return for hours. Once she is finally allowed to leave her room, Michelle discovers that she is in an underground bunker and she is not alone. With her is Emmet, a neighbor of Howard who explains that he chose to come into the bunker when he heard an explosion, and vouches for Howard's story.Despite Howard's frightening presence and violent authority, Michelle and Emmet get along well with him for a couple days until Michelle finds the earring of a young girl who went missing two years ago and was never found in the bunker. Howard lies and tells Michelle that the girl was his daughter, but Emmet knows that isn't true. At this point, Michelle and Emmet realize that Howard could be lying and intends to kill them, and so they start making a plan to escape. Unfortunately Howard discovers the plan and when Emmet takes all the blame for it, Howard kills him. Michelle is really freaking out at this point and tries to escape as Howard tries to kill her. After a four minute escape scene, Michelle finally exits the bunker and discovers that the air is clean, Howard was lying. Then, however, a spaceship comes and tries to kill Michelle, who narrowly escapes and hears towards Texas to help the wounded as a radio broadcast ends the movie, telling Michelle of the few survivors of the alien invasion. This movie including lots of dark lighting to set the mood of creepy and suspenseful, as most of the movie was shot in the bunker. Lots of extreme low and extreme high shots were used to make Howard appear more powerful than Michelle in multiple situations. The theme in this film was man v. man  as Michelle had to battle against Howard as well as man v. himself as Michelle had to battle her own fear and her willingness to run away from her problems in order to survive. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie as it was suspenseful and kept me guessing throughout the movie as questions left the viewer to decide how to view certain characters until the ending, which still left some questions in my head. I think the movie could have ended a little better, with a different plot twist that wasn't so cliche, but I still enjoyed the film for the most part and give it a 7.5 out of 10.
