Jinn

Rating: 2/5
13% on Rotten Tomatoes
You know those movies that you try to love no matter how bad other people tell you they’ll be? Yep, this was one of those. And to be quite honest I didn’t think it was that horrible, but there were a few things that definitely took it down in the rating.
The first thing that got to me was the premise: in the beginning there were three: Man made of clay, Angels made of light, and Jinn made of fire. In the beginning of the movie it shows a dagger with a specific emblem that overlaps symbols for Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Aside from this adding to what you’d suspect from the plot, it takes away from the credentials of the movie with a somewhat cheezy animation. They would have been much better off with several shots passing over the dagger itself rather that focus on the supernatural aspects of it via an animation. This type of animation continues throughout the movie therefore detracting from its better qualities.
Aside from the animation, there isn’t much that makes this movie terrible. There are places within the writing that I felt cheapened the meaning of certain scenes, however it had nothing to do with the actors cast. That being said, the story is basically a rip off from a Supernatural episode. The acting itself is actually pretty good aside from the stereotypical casting of several Arab characters and a girlfriend named Jasmine; therefore trying to approach a middle eastern ideal of Jinn being associated with genies. The last thing I have against this movie is that there are several places where there could have been more or less action and it would have made all the difference in how it was viewed; even if they had just sequenced battle scenes differently it would have taken it up a star.

The main thing with this movie is that it presents nothing new in terms of what movies usually do. It tried to approach the mythical topic of jinn in a new fashion but miserably failed
