Man of Steel (Nolan)

This week i watched Man of Steel by Christopher Nolan. My first impressions for this movie were that it wasn't going to be good, but not as bad as other superman movies. For the most part, i think i was right. It's really challenging to make a good superman movie because he's portrayed as so invincible in the comics and whatever else is considered canon material that there's never any real danger. Usually superheroes have a flaw, but superman's one weakness is kryptonite, which fails to make an appearance in this film, and good on them for not using it as a lazy crutch to propose a challenge. The movie certainly looks really good. The actors were chosen well for each part and the costume design was solid. Visual effects were also really good, especially the nice camera darts that took place when someone was thrown through buildings in the fight on earth, which did look really cool. I think my main fault for this movie is that a lot of dumb, unnecessary stuff happens. The main example that comes to mind is when superman's dad dies in a tornado -- there's absolutely no reason for him to die then AND it barely does anything for the plot. Superman easily could have rescued the person his dad was trying to rescue, and he also lets not only his own dad die for no reason, but also the person they were also trying to save. The final scene with general Zod is almost painful to watch because superman could have done a number of things to prevent the laser beam from killing the family of civilians like: 1) Flying away with Zod in his arms 2) using his own laser beam to shoot Zod in the face 3) blocking the laser beam with his body 4) gouging out Zod's eyes-- etc. Instead he just watches and then snaps Zod's neck after he has already killed the family. Still, i think the movie could have gone a lot worse in a number of ways. It's unfortunate that Christopher Nolan let this movie ruin his great track record following the Batman trilogy and Inception, but it's just something we'll all have to live with. You should watch this movie if you're into bad narrative and cheap plot holes but enjoy flashy design and fast fight scenes. Avoid this movie if you like superman or good movies. My rating for this film is just going to be the scene at the beginning where Zod yells, "I will find him!" like 8 times.
