This week for the Christopher Nolan film topic I decided to watch Inception. I have briefly watched Inception once before, but I fell asleep fifteen minutes into it so I figured I should probably re watch it. This film as a whole was really confusing to me, especially the beginning before the concept of dreams v. reality is explained. I liked the character development of Cobb played by Leonardo DiCaprio, as through out the movie it is slowly revealed that there is a reason behind his intentions of his job. The viewer knows that it has something to do with his wife, but is not sure about the details. The cinematography throughout the movie is amazing, especially as the concept of the architecture within the dreams is explained. The visual effects of the movie, as it was nominated for an Oscar for visual effects, are also outstanding, specifically in the ending dream sequences as Arthur battles in spinning hotel hallways and the architecture of the dream world crumbles around Cobb. The ending of the movie was my favorite part, as Cobb's secrets are finally revealed and everything starts to make sense, at least somewhat. I found the concept of Cobb's past very intriguing, as he had built a dream world for him and his wife to peacefully live in. But soon his wife is unable to tell the difference between dreams and reality and she refuses to return to reality with Cobb. She eventually kills herself, as she see's it as her only escape, and leaves Cobb to deal with things by himself. Cobb's wife makes an appearance in the final dream sequence and makes Cobb choose between dreams and reality. The viewer thinks that Cobb will choose to stay in the dream with his wife, ruining the lives of everyone else stuck in the dream world, but instead Cobb chooses reality. This underlines the main theme of the film which is man vs. man, as Cobb must decide to take action based on his feelings or what is best for everyone else. The film uses lots of different camera techniques such as over the shoulder and extreme close ups to give the audience a feel and perspective of each character, as well as lots of long, landscape shots to show how big and beautifully designed the dream world is.The ending of the film is perfect, as it shows Cobb returning home to his kids, finally, and the top that separates dreams from reality is left spinning on a table, leaving it up to the viewer to decide if it will fall or stay spinning, the difference between dreams and reality. Overall, I enjoyed all aspects of this movie from dialogue to music, and even though the plot was slightly confusing, it was very intriguing. I would give Inception a 9 out of 10.
