I know, I know. I haven't seen this movie yet and it's practically a sin. I hear the same about not seeing the new Star Wars yet either. Anyway, I have now finally seen it, and it is fantastic. It is interesting to see such a well-made western today, since most of the good ones are from decades ago. However, Tarantino nails this one.
First of all, the plot of this movie is fantastic and innovative. Every moment of the story had me wanting to watch more, and there were no monotonous parts of the plot to me. I understand now why this film won an Oscar for best original screenplay. The acting in this film is also top-notch. Christoph Waltz was very deserving of his Oscar for supporting actor in this film. A German dentist/bounty hunter being one of the main characters in a Western? Waltz nails the role and it was truly sad to see him shot in the film. Leonardo DiCaprio also plays a superb villain, which is another turn from the ordinary, at least for me, as I am used to seeing him as the protagonist in films. Jamie Foxx creates a strong protagonist in this film and delivers an equally as strong performance. Back to the plot, I was so impressed at how well the characters meshed in this film. A German dentist and a runaway slave in the Antebellum period make a fierce team in the old West. This is a classic Tarantino film. It delivers a grim view of the life of pre-War slaves and sends a message of the evil of the plantation system all while keeping any audience entertained with the shootouts and gore. The graphic nature of this film is Tarantino-esque, but I am not sure if all Westerns are like this, so this could be another innovative point. The set and costume design in this movie were also a point I was impressed by. Two to note were Mr Candie's house in Greenville and Jamie Foxx's blue suit he picks for himself near the beginning of the film. As for cinematography, the quick camera zooms and wide angle shots made this a classic action movie. Overall, I was very impressed by this sure classic. I would rate it 18 blood splatters out of 20.
